But again, I did not make much progress. The basic premise is the author imagines a future intellectual game embracing the highest of human intellect, ideals and knowledge. To me these are not idle questions, but changes the whole motivation that drives the players. He had also made the discovery that, in a certain peculiar manner, men of thought gave offense and aroused the repugnance of their fellows.
The combined result ends up being neither a good philosophy book, nor a good story. Like all great works of literature, it is almost impossible to summarize what Hesse is trying to say in the book. The fatal problem is that Hesse wilts instantly before the task of filling in any kind of detail about what the game was and how it worked. This book came to me with glowing praise from a few friends whose taste I have come to trust and respect. It takes place at an unspecified date, centuries into the future. But I think his book was communicating the ability to find peace through surrendering to one’s own situation and place in the universe. A good Tratactus on Society; on what distinguishes the normal ones from the elite ones. Remarkably ahead of its time.
No other novel have I ever laid down without a backward glance within a few dozen pages of the end, certain at last that the great payoff for my eight hundred pages of patience was never going to come. I fully understand why it was impossible for Hesse to actually describe the Glass Bead Game, but I was hoping he would be a little clearer to what extent these games are logical constructs or imaginary vignettes.
